In fall 2007, Dr. Alan Schneider and the staff of the NIH Heart Center at Suburban Hospital made history as the first clinical team in the country to implant a wireless internal cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). This advanced technology, which takes the traditional defibrillator to the next level, is expected to improve patient outcomes by reducing procedure time, enhancing the ability to provide customized programming, and integrating additional safety features and memory redundancies.
Tobacco-free Hospital
Since opening our doors more than 60 years ago, Suburban Hospital has been dedicated to improving the health of those we serve. One way we can continue this commitment is to promote a healthy environment for everyone who comes to our facilities.
In November 2007, Suburban Hospital joined the other four Montgomery County hospitals and Frederick Memorial Hospital in an effort to make healthcare campuses and affiliated locations tobacco-free. The impetus for this initiative is not new: since the 1980s, public concern over the health consequences of smoking and secondhand smoke has led businesses, large and small, to restrict the use of tobacco products on their premises. Many hospitals around the country have already successfully implemented tobacco-free campuses.
“As a healthcare organization, we have a responsibility to model and encourage healthful behaviors,” explains Suburban Hospital President and CEO Brian Gragnolati.
